Once all the festivities are over, everyone tries to adhere to a set of resolutions, many of which don't pan out. There are a few reasons why, some being that the goals aren't realistic, relevant, or time-bound. If your goal isn't something you're capable of currently, you'll easily lose hope and give up. If you don't set a schedule for yourself or if you change your mind about the goal in a month, it'll never materialize.
I'll let you do the work of thinking up worthwhile goals for yourself, but once you have them in mind, there's one more crucial step that you probably have been skipping: tell your goals to someone else. This goes for all goals, New Year related or not. Anytime you have something you're shooting for, you should tell a friend, family member, teammate, coworker, etc. This will keep you accountable for your goals. If you kept them all a secret, you'd comfort yourself by saying that no one will know that you failed or didn't put in the work to achieve it. But if you make it public, others will know if you don't follow through, and there may even be other stakeholders that you let down.
Enjoy the end of 2012 while you can, but keep looking forward to what you want to accomplish in 2013. Spend the next couple days pondering your objectives, and then share those goals with a trustworthy individual. After that, get to work!
Tell me your goals,
Jeff
