It is 63 degrees here in Akron and I'm loving it. I went for a run on the hill today in a t-shirt and shorts. But just two weeks ago we had a foot of snow covering everything. There were a couple days during winter break where the schools weren't even open for the students to come in and practice. So what do you do when wrestling is cancelled and you can't even get into the building where you work out?
Well, one thing I did when my conference tournament was cancelled as a freshman in high school was go around the neighborhood shoveling driveways and making money. But once you're older and the elderly ladies on the block don't think you're cute anymore, you need to find a different way to keep your muscles moving on a snow day. Almost exactly two years ago, RPI cancelled class due to snow for the first time in about six years. It was great to have no coursework for the day, but the gym where we practiced wasn't even open and the fitness center wasn't either! So a few of us took it upon ourselves and suited up for a hodgepodge workout in the snow at Prospect Park.
When we got out of the car we didn't have anything in mind, so we decided to start by running up the hill near the entrance. It was roughly 50 yards at most, but trudging through 2 feet of snow had us gasping for air. We then proceeded to make up exercises by climbing different playground equipment or the old abandoned pool building. By the time dusk rolled around, we were sopping wet and freezing, but we had a good time doing goofy, random stuff and got a surprisingly good workout. So much for no practice that day.
Whatever it is that you choose to do, don't let mother nature dictate what days you can and can't train. Don't use the weather as an excuse. Get out there and go.
Enjoy the warmth while it lasts!
Jeff
